 Going by the Hindu calendar, Guru Purnima falls on a full-moon day in the Hindu month of Ashadh, which is June to August.      Among Hindus, the day is celebrated to pay homage to Maharshi Veda Vyasa, the sage who edited the sacred Hindu text, the Vedas and wrote 18 Puranas, Mahabharata and the Srimad Bhagavatam. All these religious scriptures lay the foundation of Hindu religion.      Among Buddhists, the festival is an occasion to celebrate the holiness of their Guru, Lord Buddha. He is said to have delivered his first sermon at Sarnath, U.P. on this very day.      

It also marks the beginning of monsoon, which is primary reason to celebrate for farmers.
